Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To describe the clinical, paraclinical characteristics and evaluate the surgical outcomes in patients with safe chronic suppurative otitis media with tympanic membrane perforation at Thai Nguyen National Hospital. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 34 patients (34 ears) with non-dangerous chronic suppurative otitis media with tympanic membrane perforation at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Thai Nguyen National Hospital, from 06/2025 to 06/2026. Results: The mean age of patients was 40,7 + 13,8 years, with females accounting for 70,6%. Perforations encompassing less than 25% of the tympanic membrane surface area were the most prevalent with central perforations being the primary location. Preoperative hearing loss severity was highest in the moderate degree category with 52,9%, followed by mild degree with 23,5%. The tympanic membrane closure rate 3 months postoperatively was 97,1%. The mean bone-conduction threshold decreased from 18,3 + 6,5 dB preoperatively to 13,9 + 5,8 dB. The air-conduction Pure Tone Average (PTA) decreased from 18,3 + 6,5 dB to 30,5 + 9,7 dB. The mean Air-Bone Gap (ABG) was reduced from 25,8 + 13,4 dB preoperatively to16,6 + 7,2 dB postoperatively. All changes being statistically significant (p<0,05). Postoperatively, the proportion of patients achieving good and very good ABG categories increased, while the poor ABG category significantly decreased. All changes were statistically significant (p<0,05). Conclusion: Surgical treatment effectively restores tympanic membrane anatomical structure and improves hearing function in the majority of patients.
