APPLICATION OF DOROTHEA OREM'S SELF-CARE THEORY IN NURSING CARE OF A PATIENT WITH SUDDEN SENSORINEURAL HEARING LOSS: A CASE REPORT
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To describe the application of Dorothea Orem's self-care theory in assessing, planning, and implementing nursing care for a patient with left-sided sudden sensorineural hearing loss. Methods: A descriptive case report, cross-referenced with domestic and international literature. Results: A 45-year-old man presented on day 2 of left-sided sudden sensorineural hearing loss, in otherwise good general condition and fully independent in daily activities, but with a severe deficit in self-monitoring and communication due to the combination of a hearing barrier and acute situational anxiety — consistent with a Supportive-Educative nursing system. After establishing alternative communication channels, providing psychological reassurance, and educating the patient on the corticosteroid regimen and follow-up schedule, the patient cooperated well with treatment, showed marked reduction in anxiety, and adhered closely to the care plan. Conclusion: Orem's theory enables nurses to accurately recognize the non-physical nature of the self-care deficit in sudden sensorineural hearing loss — chiefly related to communication, psychological state, and knowledge — thereby selecting a Supportive-Educative system rather than direct compensatory intervention, which helps improve treatment cooperation and care outcomes.
