Abstract

To synthesize the symptoms, signs, audiometric and tympanometric features of middle ear cholesterol granuloma, this scientific article forms part of a scoping review on the treatment of middle ear cholesterol granuloma. A literature search was performed using the PubMed database supplemented by manual searching. Fifteen articles met the inclusion criteria. The most frequent presenting symptom was hearing loss, reported in 10/15 studies (accounting for 97.9% of patients). Other symptoms included aural fullness, tinnitus, otalgia, otorrhea, and vertigo at 82.4%, 43.4%, 34.1%, 31.4%, and 20.0% of patients, respectively. On otoendoscopy, the most common sign was a blue tympanic membrane, observed in 11/15 studies ( accounting for 78.3% of patients), other signs comprised tympanic membrane atelectasis (46.6%), swollen membrane tympanic (33.1%), and tympanic membrane perforation (16.8%) of patients. Audiometry typically demonstrated conductive or mixed hearing loss of varying severity depending on disease extent. Tympanometry was predominantly type B, consistent with middle-ear effusion and impaired middle-ear ventilation.
