Clinical characteristics and CT Scan images of maxillofacial trauma patients

Abstract

Background: Maxillofacial trauma was the second most popular among trauma in the head and neck region with increasing rate. CT scan images provide important information for proper diagnosis and management of this condition to restore normal function and facial asthetics Objectives: Describe the clinical characteristics and CT scan images of maxillofacial trauma patients Methods: This is a descriptive cohort case series study with 39 maxillofacial trauma patients in stable condition with intracranial trauma, eye trauma, multitrauma, chest, limb, abdominal trauma were ruled out at Thong Nhat hospital in Ho Chi Minh city from 10/2020 to 06/2021 Results: Traffic accidents had the highest proportion of 66.7%. Severe pain had the highest proportion of 61.5% which shows the important of pain management in treatment plan of this condition. The proportion of patients who cormobid bone fractures was relatively high (76.9%), subconjunctival hemorrhage (69.2%), swollen, bruised eyelid (79.5%), numbness at traumatic site (79.5%), step deformities at zygomatic site (69.23%).
Characteristics of CT scan images included type B fractures of zygomatic arch (38.5%), type III orbital fractures (25.6%), fractures of anterior wall of maxillary sinus (66.7%), type I naso-ethmoid complex fractures (10.3%), mental mandibular fractures (35.89%).
Conclusions: Maxillofacial trauma was noted mostly in male patients with popular causes was traffic accidents. Clinical characteristics and classification of trauma of each area in maxillofacial region in CT scan images were key factor in management and follow up plan of this condition.
