Evaluate the results of the anterior frontolateral laryngectomy treatment of early stage laryngeal cancer

Abstract

Objective: Describe clinical features and evaluate the results of the anterior frontolateral vertical partial laryn­gectomy (AFVPL). Methods: A retrospective study was conducted from Oct 2018 to Oct 2021, a total of 32 patients diagnosed with early stage glottic laryngeal cancer were treated with AFVPL at Da Nang Hospital The post operative complica­tions, recurrence rate, voice quality were evaluated after 6 months. Results: The predominant significant surgical complication was wound infection (3 patients, 9%), followed by subcutanerous emphysema (6patients, 18,75%). No patient die. No patient required secondary tracheotomy be­cause of laryngeal stenosis. There were 6 patients whose pathology revealed a positive margin. Total laryngectomy or post operative radiotherapy was delivered in this group of patients. The Voice Handicap (VHI) and maximum phonation time (MPT) after surgery were 28.50 ± 7.74 and 11.65 ± 2.12 s in our group. Conclusions: Our study indicated that AFVPL has a potential value in clinical pratice of treating early stage squamous cell carcinoma of the glottic larynx. We suggested that AFVPL is a good treatment modality for selected early glottic cancers.
