CLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS, LARYNGEAL VIDEOSTROBOSCOPIC FINDINGS AND ACOUSTIC VOICE ANALYSIS IN PATIENTS WITH VOCAL FOLD POLYPS

Abstract

Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics, videostroboscopic findings, and acoustic voice parameters in patients with vocal fold polyps. Methods: A prospective descriptive study was conducted on 40 patients diagnosed with vocal fold polyps at the National Otorhinolaryngology Hospital from October 2024 to August 2025. Clinical characteristics, laryngeal videostroboscopic findings, and acoustic voice parameters were systematically collected and analyzed.. Results: The mean age of patients was 45.8 years, with the highest proportion in the 41–50 age group (42.5%). Males predominated (62.5%), and 57.5% of patients had occupations requiring frequent voice use. Hoarseness was the most common symptom (100%). Lesions were predominantly unilateral (92.5%). Videostroboscopic examination revealed reduced mucosal wave amplitude (100%), asymmetry (80%), and incomplete glottal closure (100%), with an hourglass-shaped glottal gap being the most common pattern (57.5%). The mean acoustic parameters were: jitter 1.28 ± 1.68%, shimmer 6.58 ± 5.19%, and harmonics-to-noise ratio (HNR) 16.23 ± 4.77 dB. Conclusion: Vocal fold polyps are more common in middle-aged men, particularly those with high vocal demand occupations. Videostroboscopy and acoustic analysis demonstrate instability in vocal fold vibration, consistent with mucosal and submucosal lesions.
