Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics, histopathological features, and surgical outcomes of thyroid cancer (TC) at Vietnam–Sweden Hospital, Uong Bi.
Subjects and Methods: A descriptive case-series study was conducted on 80 patients, combining retrospective and prospective data collection from January 2024 to June 2025.
Results: The mean age was 48.3 ± 12.3 years, with females accounting for 82.5% of cases. The majority of patients were incidentally diagnosed during routine health examinations (87.5%). Regarding tumor characteristics, 68.8% were microcarcinomas (<10 mm). Histopathologically, the papillary subtype predominated (93.8%). According to TNM classification, 80.0% were stage T1a, and 36.3% had regional lymph node metastases (N1). All patients had no distant metastases (M0), and 87.5% were classified as stage I. Total thyroidectomy was performed in 93.8% of cases. One month postoperatively, transient hypoparathyroidism occurred in 23.8% of patients, and recurrent laryngeal nerve injury was observed in 8.8%.
Conclusion: Thyroid cancer at Vietnam–Sweden Hospital, Uong Bi, predominantly affected females and was often incidentally detected at an early stage as papillary microcarcinoma. Despite small primary tumor size, the rate of regional lymph node metastasis was relatively high. Total thyroidectomy remains the mainstay of treatment. The most common postoperative complications were transient hypoparathyroidism and temporary recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy.
