EVALUATION OF RESULTS OF COBLATOR INTRACAPSULAR TONSILLECTOMY IN CHILDREN UNDER 6 YEARS OLD
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Intracapsular tonsillectomy using Coblator technology is an advanced technique for children with hypertrophic tonsils causing upper airway obstruction. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of this method in children under 6 years of age. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 56 pediatric patients under 6 years old who underwent intracapsular tonsillectomy with Coblator at National Otorhinolaryngology Hospital from 02/2023 to 09/2025. Results: The mean age was 4.29 ± 0.91 years. The mean operative time was 10.48 ± 4.12 minutes. Postoperative assessment showed that after 1 day, 26.8% of patients had complete resolution of snoring, 57.1% had significant improvement, and 100% had resolution of sleep apnea. By postoperative day 7, 89.8% of children had complete or marked improvement in snoring. Only 7.1% required analgesics after surgery, and by day 7, all patients were pain-free. Blood loss was minimal in all cases (< 5 ml), and no postoperative bleeding occurred. The incidence of acute pharyngotonsillitis decreased over time: after 3 months, 75.6% had no recurrence, and after 2 years, 52.9% remained infection-free. Conclusion: Intracapsular tonsillectomy using Coblator is a safe and effective technique for children under 6 years of age. It offers short operative time, minimal blood loss, rapid pain relief, significant improvement in airway obstruction symptoms, and long-term reduction in upper respiratory infections.
