SURVEY ON KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE IN CARING FOR CHILDREN WITH ACUTE OTITIS MEDIA AMONG PARENTS OF CHILDREN DIAGNOSED WITH ACUTE OTITIS MEDIA AT VINMEC DA NANG INTERNATIONAL HOSPITAL IN 2024
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to assess the knowledge and caregiving practices of parents whose children were diagnosed with acute otitis media (AOM) at Vinmec Da Nang International Hospital.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted using structured questionnaires administered to 51 parents at the Otorhinolaryngology Consultation room, Vinmec Da Nang International Hospital.
Results: The primary sources of information accessed by participants were healthcare professionals (80.4%) and the internet (60.7%). Over 60% were aware of the causes of the disease; more than 80% recognized ear-related symptoms; over 90% took their children to specialized medical facilities for examination, and over 90% knew appropriate nutritional care during illness. However, 26.5% of parents were unaware of the potential consequences and complications of the disease. Additionally, 49% believed that preventing water from entering the ears was a preventive measure, while 29.4% incorrectly believed that earwax removal and instilling hydrogen peroxide could prevent the disease. Parents living in urban areas, whose children attend daycare, and who have higher educational levels showed statistically significantly higher scores compared to those living in rural areas, whose children do not attend daycare, and who have a high school education or lower (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: Overall, parental knowledge and practices regarding AOM were relatively adequate in terms of disease recognition, treatment, caregiving, and prevention. Nonetheless, a considerable proportion of parents still held misconceptions related to disease complications, treatment approaches, and preventive strategies, indicating the need for enhanced parental education on AOM. There is an association between parents’ place of residence and educational level with their knowledge and practices regarding AOM.
