Abstract

Objective: To assess the Voice Handicap Index (VHI) before and after surgery for benign vocal cord lesions. Methods: A prospective descriptive study of 109 patients at the Ear, Nose, and Throat Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City from June 2023 to October 2023. The VHI scores were collected before surgery and one month after surgery, and analyzed using the T-Test.

Results: The average age was 42.8 years, with 54.1% of patients in the 40-49 age group. The gender ratio was 46.8% female and 52.3% male. Occupations requiring frequent voice use included teachers (13.8%), sales staff (14.7%), and workers (15.6%). The main symptoms reported were hoarseness and voice loss (100%). Lesion types included vocal cord polyps (45.9%), cysts (38.5%), nodules (11.9%), and Reinke's edema (3.7%). The average VHI score decreased from 47.08 to 30.15 after surgery. Conclusion: After surgery, patients with benign vocal cord lesions showed a significant improvement in VHI scores and overall voice-related quality of life.
