Abstract

Objective: To describe whether the use of alternating pressure air mattresses is more effective than water mattresses in reducing the risk of pressure ulcers. Study design: A review of the literature was conducted using PubMed, Sciencedirect, and Cochrane databases to identify articles that examined whether alternating pressure air mattresses were more effective than water mattresses in reducing the risk of pressure ulcers from 2018 to 2024. Results: A total of 40 studies were searched. Four studies that met the inclusion criteria were included in the review. Three studies used a systematic review and one was a randomized controlled trial. We analyzed the characteristics and effectiveness of using the mattresses in reducing the risk of pressure ulcers. Conclusions: The results of the analysis showed that alternating pressure air mattresses were more effective than water mattresses in reducing the risk of pressure ulcers, and should be used to increase the effectiveness of treatment for patients.
