OSSICULOPLASTY FOR CHRONIC OTITIS MEDIA: A SCOPING REVIEW
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to review ossiculoplasty in treating chronic otitis media. Subjects and methods: A literature search was conducted using the Pubmed database from January 2000 to December 2023, using the appropriate keywords. Results: 373 articles were found, in which 14 articles met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected. Two types of prostheses used are Partial Ossicular Replacement Prosthesis (PORP) and Total Ossicular Replacement Prosthesis (TORP), with 60% of the cases in single-stage and 40% in two-stage. Three types of materials used were artificial, autologous, and homogenous, of which artificial prosthesis account for 78.3%, especially titanium (43.5%) and hydroxyapatite (17.4%); followed by autologous bone and cartilage (17.4%). The rate of postoperative ABG < 20 dB ranged from 33.3% to 73.8%. The level of improvement in ABG of the PORP group was from 2.4 dB to 22.1 dB, and that of the TORP group was from 2.2 dB to 22.9 dB. Conclusions: Ossiculoplasty provided good hearing recovery for chronic otitis media with and without cholesteatoma, with a tendency toward being performed in single-stage and artificial materials.
