Abstract
Objective: Describe clinical characteristics of chronic adenoiditis with otitis media with effusion (OME) complication. Evaluate the results of adenoidectomy using typanometry results. Subjects and methods: Interventional study with before and after intervention follow-up on 55 6-16 year-old patients had chronic adenoiditis with OME, who underwent adenoidectomy at Xanh Pon Hospital and Thai Nguyen Central Hospital. Results: Average age 8,9 ± 2,4 years; female/male = 1/1,29; 100% had rhinorrhea, nasal obstruction, and adenoid effusion, of which 30,9% was opalescent pus and 47,3% was thin pus. Rate of adenoid hypertrophy grade III and IV is 63,6% and 27,3% respectively. 100% of patients had color change on their tympanic membrane, including 28,1% of bulging and 22,5% of retracted membrane. After operation, all of patients’ symptoms had improved, and there were no adenoid left after 3 months. Typanometry had significant improvement after 3 months of operation. The rate of type A changed from 19,1% to 68,2% ( 49,1% of patients had typanometry go back to normal). Conclusion: Adenoidectomy gave good recovery in both clinical symptoms and typanometry results.
