FAT GRAFT MYRINGOPLASTY: A SIMPLE BUT SUCCESSFUL PROCEDURE?

Abstract
Introduction: The fat graft myringoplasty is a successful yet simple procedure for repair of small size tympanic membrane perforations. This surgical technique has advantages over other traditional technique and similar high success rate.
Methods: We report a series of cases of otitis media with small perforation underwent fat graft myringoplasty in the Department of ENT, Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Vietnam. The aim of this work was to evaluate the success rate of this surgical technique for fat graft myringoplasty. Results: Successful closure of the perforation was obtained in 30 of 32 ears (93,75%) at the third month follow up. The success rate in the group of patients who had not had previous otological surgery was higher than those of revision cases with p = 0.04. The mean postoperative air – bone gap was reduced 18.59 ± 4.75 dB, reach statistical significance (p = 0.03). Conclusion: Myringoplasty with fat graft is a simple, safe and noncomplicated technique. It gives a high successful rate, especially in small tympanic membrane perforations and requires a short hospitalization period.
